In fact, if you house is more than 5-7 years old, it's very likely a leak in the ductwork is costing you by letting warm and /or cool air escape, while all the other system components may be in great working order.
Pre-testing you heating, ventilating and air conditioning system tells you exactly where the problems are. Pre-testing should be part of a contractor's bid. It may cost a few dollars more, but it'll be a lot less than heating and cooling your attic.

The highest energy use in California homes is for central air conditioning and heating. Most homes with central air conditioning and heating systems have ducts that were never properly sealed. The average homes ducts, leak around 30% of the conditioned air outside the home (attic). These leaks are costing money.

California Duct Testing, Inc. performs and analysis of your duct system. The analysis includes the heating and cooling system. Once verified and certified that your home meets state energy standards, the information is entered into a computer program that calculates and energy rating for your home, improving your homes energy efficiency. Once the analysis is completed, a detailed rating report listing recommended energy efficiency improvements is submitted.
To make sure energy efficiency ratings are completely objective, Raters are independent contractors that have been trained and certified by CHEERS® .

CHEERS® (California Home Energy Efficiency Rating Services) is a California statewide 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting energy efficiency. Founded in 1990, CHEERS® was approved in 1999 by the California Energy Commission as the first home energy rating provider under the Home Energy Rating System Regulations. It has an independent Board of Directors representing utilities, environmental and energy conservation and consulting groups.
CHEERS® is the first rating service approved by the California Energy Commission and has upwards to 500 trained and certified raters. The raters pre-test and verify the HVAC work.
